Vatican City is located in Rome, but it's actually a sovereign city-state, which makes it the world's smallest independent nation. The Vatican is the seat of the Catholic Church. It is also the official residence of the Pope, who often performs public masses to crowds in St. Peter's Square. Aside from its importance to the world's Catholics, it is hugely significant in terms of its architecture and is home to some of the most famous art in the world, including the legendary ceiling of the Sistine Chapel painted by the Renaissance master Michelangelo.
